WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: average

Weather conditions:

Spring warming started on 6 May, since when snow-free patches appeared in tundra. By mid May snow remained in cloughs only, lakes were filled with thaw water above the ice and clearing appeared on some of them. However, cold weather with snowfalls returned after 20 May, and snowmelt was delayed. Snow reduced to 50% on 24 May and completely disappeared very quickly, by 3 June, which was also fostered by rains in early June. Ice broke relatively late on the Voikar River, on 29 May. Greening of birch leaves completed in average dates, by 10 June.

Season temperature: warm
Season humidity: rainy
Date of 50% snow-cover: 24.05
Date of ice-break on rivers: 29.05
Date of final loss of snow: 3.06

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Owls and Northern Harriers were represented by solitary wandering birds. Numbers of Willow Grouse reduced considerably compared with 2005, and they occurred at a density slightly below average. Numbers of Pintail and European Wigeon also decreased, while abundance of another dominant duck species, the Teal, increased and reached the record high value for 17 years of observations. Numbers of Common Scoter and Long-tailed Duck were above average, and the total abundance of ducks remained unchanged.
Numbers increased in almost all wader species, with an exception of Wood Sandpiper, although abundance of the latter species was still above thelong-term average. Abundance of Greenshank and Black-tailed Godwit was following a clear increasing trend during the last 10-12 years, and reached the record high values in these species and in Common Sandpiper in 2006. Non-breeding Black-tailed Godwits were quite common and in flocks of up to 16 birds.
Among passerines numbers of Bramblings increased sharpy, at to a lesser extent of Little Buntings, Willow Warblers and Yellow Wagtails. A decrease of abundance was the most pronounced in Redwings, and not significant in Meadow Pipits and White Wagtails.

Rodent dynamics:

Rodent numbers were at a low.

Rodent species recorded:

Arvicola terrestrisrare
Microtus sp.rare
Clethrionomys sp.rare
